Where I Write ~ A Room Of One’s Own

Have you ever wondered where your favorite author writes all those books you love? Are they sitting at the dining room table with a laptop? How about at a little coffee shop down the road? J.K. Rowling wrote much of the first Harry Potter book from a corner table in a small coffee shop where she could see Edinburgh Castle.

As many of you know, I’ve been in heavy revisions these past few weeks, meaning I spent a LOT of time in my office. My writing cave, if you will. It might not have the charm of a coffee shop, but it’s my writing heaven. It’s a room of my own. I thought today I’d share it with all of you. Perhaps the tour should start here:
This is where the magic happens. All those pictures on the back wall? Research.
I promise. 😉
You might notice a plethora of princessy type items around the office. Tiaras, magic wands, Barbies, they’re all mine. I fully believe one’s space should be filled with things that bring you joy.
And hey, they can be considered research as well. My fantasy characters need clothes, right? What better way to get a feel for period clothing than a 12 inch replica?
Tucked between inspirational toys and tiaras are mementos of my family. Like this picture of my kids when they were much younger. The joy on their faces always makes me smile. Even when the muse is not cooperating.
Of course, every writing space should include a comfy place for your furry muse to rest her weary head. There is a dog bed in the corner, which she does use, but the floor seems to do the job just as well.
Candles provide a certain calming ambience. There’s something about writing by candlelight that is delightful. Makes me feel like I’m back in the Renaissance scribbling away. As long as I don’t think about the fact that I’m actually typing and I have modern conveniences all around.
Love. Gratitude. Miracles.

In case you were wondering…
Yes, I am a seven year-old girl trapped in a middle-aged body. Still, don’t you love this little sign?
And for the final picture in our tour ~ doesn’t every writer have a pen addiction? Those pics on the wall? Research! Amidala? Just because I love her.
And of course, a little reminder of how it all should end. (The plaque on the wall says, ‘And they lived happily ever after.) Of course!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this tour of my writing space! Where do you write? Do homework? Read a book? Do you have a favorite space or do you grab whatever place you can find? I used to write at the dining room table until our daughter moved out. As you might have guessed, I like this room a whole lot more than the table.
Oh, and for those of you curious to know… revisions went very well! I’m not down to the word count I wanted, but the book is ready for the editor. More on that when I hear back from her. Thanks for all of your love and support! Mwuah.

  2. It’s lovely to see your writing space Tameri. LOL about your research pictures and I’m only laughing because I do exactly the same thing — do you remember Madonna’s boy toy of a few years ago??? Yep, got his picture in my office. It was wonderful to get a glimpse into your world and I’m so happy to hear that revisions are going great. You rock princess!

    • Which boy toy? Jesus? The other guy? She has a new one every year. 😉 Those pictures really do help. The ones on the left are all landscapes and if I get stuck on what a place should look like, I just glance at them and it helps. Then again, glancing at Orlando always helps!

  3. I love your writing room! I look forward to having one of my very own someday. For now, we have a desk set up in our bedroom. And it’s cluttered and all together, not very inspiring. One of the things on my to-do list is to at least straight up and make it more comfy. My oldest graduates high school in a couple years. Perhaps a room in my future? 🙂

    • Thanks Ginger! It took me a long time to get my own space (and a lot of bargaining with the Hubs), but I’m so happy to finally have it. Of course, whenever my daughter comes home she’ll say with a big old sigh, “I guess I’ll sleep on the couch because someone took my room”. Yep. 😉

  4. I love it! Especially your furry muse. 🙂 My writing spot travels between the kitchen table, living room sofa and bed… I do have one constant—the on-going process that follows me like a (welcomed) stalker.

    • The other furry muse refused to be photographed that day. I think he was having trouble with his coat… they stay with me almost the whole time I’m in there, which cracks me up. Welcomed stalkers are good. I bet you are never at a loss for creativity!

  5. I’ve carved out a corner in my living room next to a window. The view isn’t that great, but the natural light and open window helps. Someday, I hope to have a room of my own 🙂 It will definitely have at least one tiara! Thanks for the tour.

    • You’re creating a new world on the page, the view out the window doesn’t matter so much then. Right? You definitely need a tiara! make sure you wear it sometimes, too. They make every day a little more sparkly.

  6. Fun! I love it! You’re writer’s space is so pretty and inviting. I just want to hang out there. And you have a good chair. That’s sooo important. I wanted to blog about a good chair. Hahaha. Because I had a bad one for awhile. Hey, Orlando is hanging on my blog today. Heads up! 🙂

    • Come hang out! We’d have too much fun. There’s another little desk behind mine for doing crafts, we could have a write-a-thon. 😉 I used to have a really crappy chair and then my husband got this super fancy one so I decided I would get a good one too. Best decision I ever made. Orlando. Love.

      • I had a super crappy chair too. Trying to save money. So not worth it. Hubby tried it out and said, “Hell No!” Took me shopping for a new chair. One of the best decisions ever! My butt and back feel so much better. Happy butt. 🙂

  7. It is so ironic that I waited until I moved from the kitchen into the sunroom to read this! i get a little bit of glare, but I love this space since it is full of windows to our backyard.
    Sounds like you got a lot accomplished! Congrats on your revisions and lining up an editor!

  9. How fun to get a peek at your writing space. I have a desk in the family room, but it’s lined with all of my writing books – and candles. I love writing by candlelight too!

    • Thanks Julie. I can just imagine your desk! I have several writing books that travel from office to living room with me, and then I’ll forget where I put them. Yikes. Thanks for sharing your writing space with us!

  10. I’m with August – I travel around (cause if I had a cozy den, I’d want to sleep and read a book in it). But I love your tiaras and your space!! Can I come over and drink tea and play dress up??

  11. Love your writing space, I was justing going through pictures of my land based office back when…

    My new writing space is a lot more cramped but much more efficient in my floating home. We gave up a huge frig/freezer and I built my own desk space with settees. I’ll show you, come along to my blog.

    • Then where do you eat? My mom did that with her table and always ate on her couch. I suppose if you like it as your desk, then don’t change a thing! If it works for you, stay with it. 😉

  12. I LOVE that you still have a seven-year-old trapped inside of you! Never lose that! It’s more precious than most people will recognize.

    I don’t have any special place to write right now since we just have an 800 square foot apartment that is filled to overflowing. But now that we’re buying a 1700 square foot house I am bound and determined to make myself a corner. And when that happens there will be a post about it for sure! =)

  14. Jealousy is bad, so I’m trying not to be jealous, but I totally am. Your writing cave is awesome. I don’t have so much as a cork board of my own right now. I write with my laptop on my lap wherever I can find a space. I have this little dream in my mind of what I want my space to be like one day. One day 🙂

    • No, no! Don’t be jealous. I had to wait a looooong time for this room. Keep a dream of it in your mind and someday it will happen. When you do get it, I look forward to seeing pics of it!

    • Hahaha! It was neat and organized for the pictures! Actually, it’s still pretty neat, but you can’t see my desk. There are revisions and research stuff all over the place. And the craft desk (not shown) is a complete disaster, but shhhh, don’t tell!

    • Naw, don’t organize the office if your big chair works for you! I’ll often pop downstairs to do some blogging or web surfing, but I like to do the bulk of my writing at my desk. Probably because there’s less distractions here. Downstairs has food and the TV. 😉
