Alas, I did not get to see my sweet Nathan Fillion at Comic-Con last weekend. I did, however, get to meet some amazing writers and see some pretty cool stuff. Not only that, but I hung out with Debra Kristi for most of the weekend, which seriously took away the heartache of missing Nathan.
Everyone has their own idea of what makes the perfect Comic-Con. For some, it’s purely about the comics. For others, it’s a chance to show off costuming skills. Many see Comic-Con as a chance to get close to their favorite stars, whether they be on TV, in films, or a rock and roll legend. Like this guy. Yep, that’s Gene Simmons (he was at the My Little Pony booth. Hmmm…)
Me? I go for the panels. Writing panels, mostly.
This year three of my favorite fantasy authors were on the same panel and I was in geek girl heaven. Not only did I get a chance to see Brandon Sanderson, Christopher Paolini, and Patrick Rothfuss talk about all things fantasy, I spent many hours tucked way in Room 2 with Debra Kristi learning about the craft from another fantasy writer. Maxwell Alexander Drake may not be as well-known as the Sanderson’s or Martin’s in the fantasy genre, but I’m fairly certain he will be soon.
I’m going to do a whole post on him, so I’ll just tell you briefly that he gave amazing ‘how to’ workshops on plotting, fight scenes, marketing, and much more. All of his writing tips can be found on his website because he’s just that awesome. A writer who gives back to the writing community ~ love it!
Comic-Con just isn’t the same without all the zany people who attend each year. And the costumes. Oh! The wacky costumes these people think up. Of course steampunk was huge again this year and I saw a lot of cross-costuming, if you will.
Steampunk Super Heroes? Yes, please.
Star Wars is always popular. I’m pretty sure Chewbacca was flirting with me with that smile. What do you think?

Which mean you also see quite a few Slave Leias. Some are hot…
…and some are, well, I’ll let you decide.
My favorite costumes had to be Alice and her Mad Hatters. Why she needed two, I don’t know, but I love them.

Amazing pictures, Tameri! It looks like so much fun! I’m not one to stand in long lines, but wandering through the crowds to see whoever is also wandering work for me. I probably would have spent most of my time at the writing panels, too. When you’ve seen one stormtrooper, you’ve seen them all. That guy does look sexy as slave Leia, except for the bra, which is kind of disturbing. 🙂 Glad you had fun and learned a lot!

I know! At first he was disturbing, but now I’m all about him. The weird thing was, when I was taking his picture, his friend was taking mine. They did that with everyone who took his photo. Kind of strange to be on the other end of the lens.
I’d be at the writing panels. I may stand in a long line if the charcters were worth it. I love the show, “Being Human” If they were there I would have been in a long line. Glad you had a blast. I may go next year. I didn’t know they had writing panels.
Being Human was there. I thought about getting in line for that one. I believe they were off site at the Hilton this year. They get long lines over there as well.
The only time I’ve waited in line for more than two hours was last year to see the Castle panel and even then it was like, two hours three minutes.

Yes! Except, what two? I’m only close to Comic-Con, but you can totally stay here for that. I wish I lived closer to San Francisco (night of writing dangerously), but that’s a good seven hour drive from here. California is huge.
I’ve heard we can write off travel expenses if they are for writing purposes. Sweet. Now, to figure out how to fund them so we can write them off… that’s the fun part. 😉

Yes you do. I was thinking that today when I was uploading all the pics… wait, didn’t I have this pic? Oh, nope. That was Debra. All my predator pics were blurry, so I couldn’t put any of those up. Next year, I’m using big camera. Baby camera couldn’t handle the pressure of Comic-Con!
I had so much fun hanging out with you. Now we get to do it again at RWA… I’m wondering if there will be as many costumes? 😉

I think I’d be like you – interesting in the sites and scenes that passed by me here and there but more into the workshops and opportunity to learn and expand my knowledge. Waiting in line for hours to see a celeb doesn’t do it for me…I’d rather bump into him or her at the bathroom…LOL!!

I have never thought about going to Comic Con even though I love all that it represents. I think I will have to put it on my to do list for next year. Looks like so much fun.
It really is a ton of fun. Even if you’re not into comics there is so much the convention has to offer. If you came out we would have a blast. I hope you can make it!

I definitely would if I was into it! I dress up for almost everything else! Hahaha! You should see the costumes in my basement. Accumulation after years and years of garage saling!
You are way too cool, Susie! I can see you dressing up as Wonder Woman and stomping around in your boots. I have tons of costumes that I buy, but then never wear. I need to find my inner Susie and put the darn things to use.
Oh definitely! I wore that red wig (from my Facebook profile picture) to a fund raiser! I was having a really bad hair day and it was close enough to Halloween. I liked the wig so much, I cut off all my hair before Christmas!
You must still be on cloud 9!! I would have definitely been at the writing panels…that and the Being Human panel. Oh, and the Fringe panel…ahhhh. Maybe next year. Going to go check out your pinterest board 🙂
If you’re into those shows, then YES! You need to be here. There are always great panels for the shows, but I don’t have the patience to wait in line. One of these years I’m going to… We can wait in line together and keep each other entertained. Next year!
Great post! I wouldn’t dress up, but i would try to find the guys from one of my favorite podcasts. I didn’t know Comic-Con had writing panels–I’d be all over those, too. My husband and I had planned a SDCC trip a few years ago, but had to cancel because of a family emergency. We haven’t made plans to go again. 😦

Sounds like you had a blast! So great. I tend to be a mingler at events, though I love slipping away to write in between. I might sport a costume, especially if there was some awesome prize, like meeting Oprah or being featured in her book club. 😉
That would definitely be a prize worth winning. Heck, for that I might even dress up!
I’ll just go ahead and admit – I know nothing about Comic-Con. But, with continuing bogs like this, catching up will be a pleasure. And, it’s so much fun to attend a conference or festival at any time that touches not only our intellectual side and we learn but it all seems more like play. The pictures are wonderful. Great job.

Comic-Con is one of those things you either get and really want to do, or it is a complete mess and you want to stay far away from it. Insane is the word that keeps popping up in my mind. With the focus moving more toward TV and movies, it’s become more mainstream over the years. Still, the costuming and craziness calls to that chaotic part of my heart. Glad to provide you with some fun!

You are so welcome, Patricia! It’s not as gorgeous as France, but it certainly is entertaining. The writing panels were exactly that ~ AWE-some. I just read over my notes today and thought of things I need to change in my WIP. That to me is priceless. Now I’m off to RWA to learn even more. My head is going to explode. Seriously.
